A new pole says that well over 35 million Americans use the Web in order to get religious information. Most, notably, 41% were religious seekers. On the web, you can read and watch religious information that includes theological perspectives that literally span the entire globe. There are over 4,000 books on one website alone: www.religion-online.org. Web sites, blogs, books, and encyclopedia's from any religion can be obtained from simply Googling any religious topic.
Interestingly, most of these religious surfers are under the age of 30; therefore, church, TV, friends, and family are no longer the only modes of spiritual formation in the life of an adolescent. Is the ease of theological accessibility healthy for Christians? I would say yes and no. Hopefully, the Bible would be the primary source of your search for who Jesus is rather than the web, friends, family, and even your church. However, before you become an avid religious surfer, it is important that you have a firm foundation in your faith so that you can’t be easily swayed from a mere You Tube video. The web can give you an inside scoop into other theological world-views which can stretch and grow your faith, rather than only understanding the religious perspective you were raised in.
The web can do 1 of 3 things to or for your faith. First, It may provide validation to the religion you grew up believing in. Secondly, the web may convince you that your religion is false and another is true. Lastly, it may just merely expand your theological worldview. Always remember to be wise when reading religious information on the web.
Most importantly, weigh everything you hear or read juxtaposed with the Bible. (2 Timothy 3:16)
